In Residence: August 2006 - October 2007

Payne
Peterson (he was in the "P" litter) on his first night away from his
siblings. He was named for a friend of Deirdre's, a former
city
editor of the Ithaca
Journal.
|

|
As part of his evening
constitutional Payne would stop for a "sap snack" at the sugar maple
stump in our wild garden.
|
Payne
was fond of having his belly rubbed. Anytime, anywhere.

Taughannock
Falls State Park is a place where a lot of people walk and many walk
their dogs. Deirdre took Payne there frequently to get him used to
walking past other people and other dogs without accosting them.
He was anthropocentric!
During the warmer weather he would wade in Taughannock Creek and
eventually he went swimming in Cayuga Lake.
Deirdre
bought a floating bone for him, but he didn't seem to get the idea of
'fetch' until Bill got in the water and fetched the bone himself. Then
he got it, but was not enthusiastic. He was
not fond of getting his ears wet. |
| Payne
loved to ride in the car. He visited three of the 11 Finger Lakes and
most of the waterfalls in the greater Ithaca area. If he wasn't asleep
in the wayback, he would generally jam his head in between the
headrests. |

 |
After
Payne went back to Freedom Guide Dog for 6 months of training, he
was placed in New York and began his working life.
Who knew that all those treks in Taughannock Creek gorge would help him
acclimate to skyscrapers and rushing traffic. |
Good dog!
